The Shell Technique refers to the horizontal and vertical regeneration of severely compromised bone ridges and was first developed with heterologous cortical laminae by Dr. Domenico Dentici from Genoa. The Shell Technique offers an alternative to intraoral autogenous cortical bone harvesting, thereby reducing surgical morbidity and risks associated with the procedure through the use of a heterologous cortical lamina. The technique involves using rigid heterologous laminae that are shaped, trimmed to size, and screwed together with osteosynthesis screws and/or directly to the bone ridge, allowing the creation of a biologically suitable box for bone regeneration. The laminae are combined with autogenous bone, which remains the material of excellence for these regenerative sites.
